"Our Hands are God's Hands"

"It is so comforting

to receive a prayer shawl, as it offers more than mere words. It is soft, warm

and restorative. There is mystery in the prayer shawl."
A prayer shawl recipient

Core Values

God calls us to serve hurting people inside and outside of the church. The Prayer Shawl Ministry both benefits those in need as well as providing a ministry for the participants. PSM offers a place for knitters to use their gifts of handwork in the service of others.

Core Purpose

Shawls are available for members of the parish to give to their loved ones near and far. The PSM exists to bring the comfort and healing from God through the gift of a hand knitted shawl and accompanying prayer. The ministry also offers an opportunity for service by the members of the PSM. The PSM acknowledges that serving is mutual. Members of the PSM are as served as are the persons they are serving. The purpose of the PSM complements St. Paul’s purpose.

St. Paul’s Purpose

The mission of St. Paul’s Memorial Church is to celebrate and bear witness to God’s love in our community, the University of Virginia, the region and the world beyond us. By our worship, our teaching and our outreach, we seek to make known God in Christ, equipping our members for service in the world.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry as a Healing Ministry

Members of the ministry knit the shawls with prayerful intention for those who will receive them as a tangible sign of God’s embrace. We acknowledge the mystery of healing. We see our church as a congregational hospice that welcomes all to God’s healing grace. Healing is God’s work. We open ourselves to healing. St. Paul’s offers healing prayers during communion at its 10:00 service.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayers

You may want to say this prayer before you begin to knit:

I ask God’s blessing on this work of my hands and my heart. May this shawl be a blessing to my hands as I create a work of beauty and love, and a blessing to the one who will receive it. May this shawl be welcomed by the receiver in the loving spirit in which it is created. I join my blessings and prayers with all the hand workers at St. Paul’s and with others all over the earth who seek to bring healing and comfort into the world.

This gift is made with Love by a parishioner at St. Paul’s

as a mantle and a sign of God’s healing presence,
to strengthen you when you are weary,
ease your suffering,
encircle you with caring when you are in pain,
comfort you when you feel alone,
and remind you of God’s endless compassionate presence.
