Personnel News from Jim Richardson

Staff changes - I am excited to announce two important staff changes which I hope will help address some of what we heard in the congregational listening process earlier this year: Iris Potter will become our new Director of Hospitality. She will be responsible for the many facets of hospitality at St. Paul’s, from our Sunday evening meals for students to our Wednesday community night dinners. She will also create a Sunday ministry for greeting new people, particularly young families with children, and she will expand the ministry she already does with visiting the elderly and the home-bound, and coordinate our hospital visitor program. The Rev. Stacy Williams-Duncan will be our new part-time Director of Children and Family Ministries. Stacy is a Ed.D. student at the Curry School of Education and one of our Skinner Scholars. She comes to us from the Diocese of Washington DC where she was, until recently, the Senior Chaplain at the National Cathedral School for Girls. She will be responsible for our Church School program and she will also be developing a family-oriented worship service on Sundays as well as family programs for our Wednesday Community Nights. She will participate part-time as a priest in the worship life of the parish. She begins work Aug. 1, but you will have an opportunity to meet her later in the month of June, and she will also be at our Shrine Mont parish weekend in July.

THIS WEEK AT ST. PAUL'S
|

Generation Wise Meets Marigold Hotel – Generation Wise, a group for the elder members at St. Paul’s, will meet Thursday, June 21, at 12:30 p.m. , in the Lounge. Brenda Peterson, using the film "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," will lead a discussion on retirement, relocation, and financial concerns. If possible, see the film (shows three times daily at Vinegar Hill, senior rates). We invite you to think about the characters with whom you identify and the ones you’d like to emulate. (N.B. the cast includes an outstanding cast of male and female British actors in their senior years.) Bring a bag lunch to the meeting, and feel free to join us, even if you’ve not participated before. For more information, call Mary Carolyn Lawson, 906-6266.r

REEL THEOLOGY
|
|
Summer films and theological reflections - Again this summer we are planning to show a series of films that work well as a basis for a theological reflection in June and July. Come join us on Wednesday nights. Since we don't have Community Night during the summer, eat before you come, or brown bag it - we'll provide popcorn. The movies will start promptly at 7; the discussion will follow, after a short break. If you want to come just for the movie, that's OK too. We also have one movie for kids of all ages: "Up".
Here is this summer's remaining lineup:
June 27 - Lilies of the Field (1963) (94 min): An unemployed construction worker (Homer Smith) heading out west stops at a remote farm in the desert to get water when his car overheats. The farm is being worked by a group of East European Catholic nuns, headed by the strict mother superior (Mother Maria), who believes that Homer has been sent by God to build a much needed church in the desert.
July 11- Hugo (2011) (126 min): Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.
July 18 - Up (2009) (96 min) (For children): By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years younger, inadvertently becomes a stowaway.
July 25 - Doubt (2008) (104 min): In a Bronx Catholic school in 1964 a popular priest's ambiguous relationship with a troubled 12 year old black student is questioned by the school's principal.s an entry in the newsletter

STEPHEN MINISTRY
|
|
God is in the room – Frances Perkins, whose feast day the Episcopal Church celebrated on June 13, was the first female Cabinet member in U.S. history. On her desk was a note: “Remember . . . we are only day laborers in the vineyard of the Lord – we are not the architect –- the planner – God is that.” The Stephen Ministry makes the same distinction: The ministers are caregivers, but when it comes to healing life’s wounds, God is the curegiver. If you or someone you know might benefit from this ministry, please contact the Rev. Jim Richardson, our Rector, at 434-295-2156.

MISCELLANEOUS
|

Shrine Mont Waiting List - Due to an unusually high volume of early registrations for our July 13-15 Shrine Mont retreat, we are already filled to capacity! We have started a waiting list in case we have cancellations or if more rooms become available. If you are interested in adding your name to this list, please call the church office at 295-2156.
A Word from the Treasurer – Realizing that many parishioners are away for part of the summer, the Vestry asks that you keep up your pledge payments so that we can meet our regular monthly expenses. We are grateful for your generosity. Education for Ministry (EfM) - Are you an EfM graduate? If you join the new EfM Alumni/ae Association you can have the PDF's of all four years of lessons for free. Dues will be $25 per year, members will receive special privileges, and every penny of your $25 will be used for scholarships. Watch for an announcement coming very soon with information about the Alumni/ae Association kickoff on July 1. For more information go to sewanee.edu/efm.
