UPCOMING AT ST. PAUL’S

Generation Wise – Aging in the Digital Age: Are You Ignoring or Using the New Technology? Generation Wise continues to meet bi-weekly over the summer, and Aging in the Digital Age will be our next topic on Thursday, July 5, 12:30 p.m., St. Paul’s Lounge.  Bring your lunch and join the discussion led by Percy Park, as we examine how we use computers, i-pads, i-phones, etc. to communicate.  We will try to have some graphic demonstrations of the technology.  This is intended to be a fun exploration but also you could get some answers to “questions you’ve always wanted to ask” about technology.

We open and close with prayer and provide an opportunity for people to share what’s going on in their lives, and, as a result, we are getting to know more of our fellow parishioners who are in their senior years.  Join Us.

Peter Carey's First Sunday – The Rev. Peter Carey, our new Senior Associate Rector, will preach on Sunday, July 8.  A reception welcoming Peter and his family will be held in the Parish Hall after the 10 a.m. service.

Baptisms – Our next baptisms will be on Sunday, August 19, at the 10 a.m. service.  If you or a family member would like to be baptized, please contact a member of the clergy.

THIS WEEK IN OUR COMMUNITY

July 7th: It's Moving Day at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville - While these words often incite dread at the mere mention of packing tape and boxes, conjuring up images of lugging friends’ sofas up multiple flights of stairs, moving day is always the most exciting time at Habitat.  In particular, the relocation of residents into the “Promisekeeper” building represents a unique opportunity to participate in the closure of an important and long-awaited piece of the redevelopment process at Sunrise Park.  Join other volunteer Saturday July 7th and/or Sunday July 8th from 7:45 am - ~2:30 pm at Sunrise Park.  We’re looking for a special group of able-bodied people willing to carry boxes, but who can also be very respectful of the residents’ belongings and sensitive to how simultaneously exciting and scary the pending change is for them. For those who prefer not to carry boxes, there may be opportunities to assist with food, last-minute packing, and to keep the residents company during the move. Breakfast will be provided and will be a great time of fellowship with the Sunrise families. Please pack a lunch.  Please register online for the "Sunrise Move!" event at www.cvillehabitat.volunteerhub.com or contact Katie G. by June 30 if you plan to attend  (434-293-9066  ext. 170).

LEARNING

Men's Bible Study – The Men's Bible Study is nearing the end of the Gospel of Mark (Ch.14)! Consider starting your Wednesdays in fellowship and with discussion that is more filling and stimulating than the accompanying fresh bagels and coffee. In the library, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.

Sunday Scriptures: Going deeper – Join the Rev. Dr. Heather Warren for a preview of the following Sunday’s Scripture lessons after our 10 a.m. worship each Sunday. REEL THEOLOGY

Summer films and theological reflections - Again this summer we are planning to show a series of films that work well as a basis for a theological reflection in June and July. Come join us on Wednesday nights. Since we don't have Community Night during the summer, eat before you come, or brown bag it - we'll provide popcorn. The movies will start promptly at 7; the discussion will follow, after a short break. If you want to come just for the movie, that's OK too. We also have one movie for kids of all ages: "Up".

Here is this summer's remaining lineup:

July 11- Hugo (2011) (126 min): Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.

July 18 - Up (2009) (96 min) (For children): By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years younger, inadvertently becomes a stowaway.

July 25 - Doubt (2008) (104 min): In a Bronx Catholic school in 1964 a popular priest's ambiguous relationship with a troubled 12 year old black student is questioned by the school's principal.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Please don’t think we’re being rude - One of the core values of the Stephen Ministry is confidentiality. This means that we don’t reveal anything about our work – even to respond to a well-intentioned inquiry such as, “Have you been assigned a care receiver?” In our supervision sessions, where we report on how our relationships are going, we do not use names and take care not to reveal any details that might identify a care receiver. Care receivers, however, are free to say as much or as little as they wish. If you or someone you know might benefit from this ministry, please contact the Rev. Jim Richardson, our Rector, at 434-295-2156.

MISCellaneous

Shrine Mont Waiting List –  Due to an unusually high volume of early registrations for our July 13-15 Shrine Mont retreat, we are already filled to capacity!  We have started a waiting list in case we have cancellations or if more rooms become available.  If you are interested in adding your name to this list, please call the church office at 295-2156.

A Word from the Treasurer – Realizing that many parishioners are away for part of the summer, the Vestry asks that you keep up your pledge payments so that we can meet our regular monthly expenses. We are grateful for your generosity.
