UPCOMING AT ST. PAUL'S

Generation WISE Generation WISE is Calling for Ideas. Our next WISE meeting is Thursday, August 16, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Bring at least 1 idea you're willing to develop, lead or participate in for upcoming WISE gatherings.

Baptisms – Our next baptisms will be on Sunday, August 19, at the 10 a.m. service.  If you or a family member would like to be baptized, please contact a member of the clergy.

Backpack Blessing – On August 19  after the 10 a.m. service (about 11:15-11:30) we will all process outside to the Poist Meditation Garden where we will gather together for a brief and fun “Blessing of the Backpacks.”  As we all head back to school and work after a tremendous summer, we want to honor and recognize our students, teachers, administrators, parents and other who are embarking upon this new year with hope, excitement (and perhaps a bit of nervousness). Peter Carey, with help from Nik, Heather and Stacy, will bless the backpacks (computer bags, briefcases, etc) and also those who are entering this new academic year!  All are welcome to join in this new tradition at St. Paul's!

Family Game Night – Join us on Saturday, August 25, at 5 p.m. for a family game night in the parish hall and lounge.  Fun for parishioners of all ages!  Bring a favorite board game or card game to share, or simply join in the other games.  Kids can bring their favorites too.  We'll have pizza and and drinks and oreos for all.  Please email Alice Fitch at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you plan to come, so we can have a general idea of how many to expect.

LEARNING

Men's Bible Study – The Men's Bible Study is nearing the end of the Gospel of Mark (Ch.14)! Consider starting your Wednesdays in fellowship and with discussion that is more filling and stimulating than the accompanying fresh bagels and coffee. In the library, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.

Sunday Scriptures: Going deeper – Join the Rev. Dr. Heather Warren for a preview of the following Sunday’s Scripture lessons after our 10 a.m. worship each Sunday. STEPHEN MINISTRY

What have the Stephen Ministers been up to? Stephen Ministers met this week for continuing education to learn about working with people in long-term care. Katha Bollfrass, chaplain at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, led the discussion and answered our questions. The Rev. Jim Richardson also met with us, and we had our regular peer check-in session. If you or someone you know might benefit from this ministry, please contact the Rev. Jim Richardson, our Rector, at 434-295-2156.

REEL THEOLOGY

REEL THEOLOGY Encore by Integrity/Charlottesville – Did you think Reel Theology was over for the summer?  You have one last chance to catch a movie followed by theological reflection, in an encore presentation by Integrity/Charlottesville!  Since we don't have Community Night during the summer, eat before you come, or brown bag it - we'll provide popcorn.  The movie will start promptly at 7 p.m.; the discussion will follow, after a short break.  If you want to come just for the movie, that's OK too.

August 8 - Were the World Mine (2008) (95 min):  In this fantastical comedy, a bullied and demoralized gay student at an all-boys school uses a magical flower derived from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream' to turn many in his community gay.  Then, with the help of his drama teacher, he must confront the ethicality of his actions.

MISCELLANEOUS

A Word from the Treasurer – Realizing that many parishioners are away for part of the summer, the Vestry asks that you keep up your pledge payments so that we can meet our regular monthly expenses. We are grateful for your generosity.

Shrine Mont slide show – There is a slide show of this year's Shrine Mont retreat on our website (www.stpaulsmemorialchurch.org). Just click on the Connect/Shrine Mont menu item.

MARTHA'S GUILD WELCOMES YOU! – Would you like to become part of an exciting ministry of our church? The Martha's Guild hosts receptions and special events throughout the academic year. Our work includes everything from leaving a hot soup dinner for our clergy between services on Christmas Eve - to the spring Lenten Lunch Speaker Series,  known to host over 100 guests.  Hospitality is at the heart of Christianity and we have a vibrant group of men and women who enjoy providing fun and welcoming events for our parish and beyond. We would love for you to be a part of this dynamic group. To join us or for information, contact Jane Butler ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
