Play Partners, sponsored and directed by Children, Youth and Family Services (a Charlottesville-based nonprofit organization), was initiated at St. Paul’s in 1997. The program, designed to develop literacy skills through play activities, is for low-income, preschool-age children in home daycare settings. Teams of two volunteers visit the same daycare home one hour each week during the school year, reading to the children and offering follow-up play activities based on the story. New volunteers are welcome at any point during the year. Although this is a weekly commitment, there is a strong substitute system, so volunteers can arrange to be absent from time to time.

ADP has raised funds since 1985 to support highly effective projects in Kenya. These projects, whose leaders report to local supporters and occasionally visit here, enable participants to improve their health and income, obtain clean water, grow more food and trees, care for orphans and the ill, and attend school. ADP holds several fundraising and educational events each year. Volunteers are needed to help with planning, set-up, food, communication with supporters and project leaders, and selling crafts from Kenya.

There's more. Read about the 2012 and 2011 Harambee dinners and about the effective projects we help support.
