St. Paul’s Memorial Church at the University of Virginia, a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, seeks a full-time Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries
St. Paul’s is seeking a professional Christian educator to join our staff at a moment of growth and opportunity in the life of our parish. The Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries will be a key member of a leadership team—including a new Rector (2017), new Music Director (2018), new University Chaplain & Associate Rector (2018), and experienced Parish Administrator—working on vision and the setting of new precedents and priorities for the next chapter in our life and ministry. As we near the end of a year-long consultancy with Ministry Architects, St. Paul’s is energized and optimistic about the future of our children’s and youth ministries. We have a large, diverse pool of new volunteers and the financial resources to pursue big dreams.
We are a growing parish church located directly across the street from the Central Grounds of the University of Virginia in the City of Charlottesville. Founded in 1910 as a mission to the University, St. Paul’s has evolved into a diverse parish church for the Charlottesville area. Our congregation, with attendance of about 300 on most Sundays, includes a lively mix of town and gown. We are a curious, engaged community of families, graduate students, longtime locals, faculty members, undergraduates, and retirees. We aspire to offer children and teenagers authentic experiences of Christian faith and community in an inclusive environment of joyful curiosity.
St. Paul’s is looking for a Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries who wants to . . .
Deepen the integration of children and youth into parish-wide ministries, including worship leadership and mission and service.
Recruit, coordinate, inspire, and appreciate large numbers of volunteers.
Collaborate with our Director of Music to build on the success of our thriving Junior Choir program.
Engage with our undergraduates, in partnership with our University Chaplain, to identify and develop their gifts for children’s & youth ministry.
Develop and exercise ministry and leadership skills as part of a collaborative staff that is focused on cultivating and celebrating the blessings of intergenerational community.
Contribute to parish-wide strategies for growth in areas such as welcome, volunteer recruitment, adult formation, and mission and service.
Grow with us (for the next three or more years) and be compensated according to our desire for commitment and excellence in this position.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Christian education or a closely related field, and a deep appreciation for the unique theological and liturgical heritage of the Episcopal Church. Experience in a parish setting is strongly preferred. A sense of joy in working with people of all ages is essential, as are strong writing skills and an attitude of openness, optimism, and flexibility. Please submit a résumé, along with a letter to the Rector, the Rev. Will Peyton, describing why you think you might be called to this ministry. Application materials should be addressed to email@example.com, and received by March 31.
